City students emerged as world toppers in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams held last November and May-June 2011, at the national level.
Out of the 12 Indian world toppers, seven are from Dhirubhai Ambani International School. The students have topped the world in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Physical Education.
Students from top international schools in Mumbai have secured the World Topper and India Topper awards in several subjects, which are given by the University of Cambridge International Examinations. Aditya Krishnan, Neeraj Delima, Nishanth Reniwal, Samarth Goenka and Tanvi Potdar aced in Mathematics. Shilpa Vijaysrinivasan topped in additional Mathematics, Purav Shah topped in Physical Education.
Several other students from the city emerged as India toppers.VaishnaviMandhaniya from Podar International School andIndrishkaGrewal from Jamnabai Narsee School were some of the high scorers across the country in business studies.
The IGCSE exam is equivalent to SSC or ICSE Board exams held in the country. Vandana Lulla, director and principal of Podar International School, Santa Cruz said, "We learnt that nearly 11 students from our school have emerged as toppers in India or among seven IGCSEs.We are ecstatic about the students' achievements.”
Sudeshna Chatterjee, Principal of Jamnabai Narsee School, located in Juhu, said, "It is different from the other conventional exam formats. Their portion is not restricted merely to textbooks, but students are required to access information available online too. Teachers are also required to work hard and undergo training to adjust to this format."
The IGCSE is conducted by CIE and involves 1.3 million students from 156 countries. The course has a share of theoretical learning as well as hands-on practical knowledge.
